This Space Reserved for Butterflies (Cleveland)
Picture and Words by Earl Newton (Cleveland, OH // Aug 2009)

I snapped a photo of this little one when I stopped to fix a burnt fuse in my car. I’d never seen such a delicate creature against such a harsh backdrop.
His wings were like paper, rigid and fluttering in the wind. I couldn’t tell whether he was alive or not. As the wind caught him, his wings would roll him back and forth.
As I replaced the fuse, I saw a fat little bird hopping suspiciously nearby. Truly an overweight little bird, built like an avian Koosh ball. It kept one eye cocked toward me, occasionally bouncing closer, his gaze shifting from the little butterfly to me as if to say, “You gonna eat that?”
I did not eat the butterfly.
