Wisconsin Watercolor
Picture and Words by Earl Newton (Near Crandon, WI // Aug 2009)

This seems like the stereotype of Wisconsin: one of the last black-and-white places in a rapidly-encroaching world of color.
“Black and white” is always used to refer to closed minds or beliefs. It’s a very exclusive term. Somehow it almost never applies to you or your friends.
I didn’t see a lot of “black and white” in my brief stay in Wisconsin. The people I met seemed just as hungry for color as anywhere. Most of them just wanted to get out of Wisconsin. The rest just wanted to be left alone.
I’ll be labelled a terminal optimist for saying this, but maybe we need to rethink our ideas of the “black and white” people we dislike so much. Perhaps we should think of them as “coloring book” people: black and white at the outset, but always destined for color.
